Children from Reedings Primary School, High Wych Primary School, Mandeville Primary School and Spellbrook Primary School worked collaboratively on a two day intensive project to build a new directory for local businesses, as seen from a child's perspective.
The children approached local shop keepers and invited them to buy a slot on a new web site. Using persuasive arguments that they had prepared they described the unique selling point of the web site and why each business would want to be involved. If the sale was successful the children then asked if they would like a jingle made as well, upselling from the word go!
Taking photgraphs, recording vital information and picking up leaflets and brichures to help, the young entrepreneurs returned to school to start the daunting task of creating a vibrant website filled with information, images and audio clips. With just about a day to complete the task, they set about learning the software that would be used to build the site.
Working with Apple's 'Garageband' software jingles came thick and fast, but precision and professionalism was the name of the game! Re-working and refining their efforts, the group eventually got to a standard they were happy with.
Writing up the text for the entry in the directory proved as much of a challenge, as the essential information had to be correct and yet succint.
Finally, the group started to build the web site, which was the first any of them had attempted. Using Apple's 'iWeb' they selected a template that they liked, spent time working out how to use the software and then added all of the entries they needed.
The result is 'http://www.sawbo.biz', and as you'll see, for a first time web site, using tools never seen before, within an impossibly tight time frame, this group of future business owners were remarkably successful!
Congratulations to them all, and thanks to all of the local shops and businesses who took part in the project!
