Staff training with radio!

Teachers in Hounslow learn how to use radio broadcasts in their lessons, and spend a day trying out different activities!

Teachers at Springwell Junior school in Hounslow spent a day with Hal, learning about radio broadcasting and how it can be used in day to day learning. With the fabulous 'Myriad' software from 'P Squared' being used, all of the staff had a go at being a DJ for a short time, operating mixing desks and learning how to speak to a strict time schedule over the start of music. This was tough at first, but they soon got the hang of it!

Later they had a go at making jingles with Garageband, practised the art of 'Foley' and ended up making a short play.

Whilst this was a lot of fun, the serious message is that radio can help support learning, and excite children's imaginations! The day long workshop introduced the staff to a method of working that Hal uses frequently in schools when working with learners of all ages, and which has proved extremely successful. Throughout the day the staff got to try lots of different activities, and then discuss how they could be embedded in their daily practice.

There were a few budding DJs in the staff team - perhaps Radio Springwell FM will find a new lease of life and see a whole new dimension added to the school!
